Liskeard Area Guide
Why move to Liskeard?
Liskeard is an ancient stannary and market town and civil parish in South East Cornwall. Perfectly located for access to Cornwall and Devon, Liskeard has it all. Close to city life, the benefit of a town community and close to beaches and countryside in all directions.
Liskeard is steeped in history. Originally called Liscarret, Liskeard was one of the holdings of the Count of Mortain when it was recorded in the Domesday Book, the earliest reference to the town.
Living in Liskeard gives you the convenience of being able to commute further into Cornwall, or across the River Tamar into Devon, including the wonderful city of Plymouth. Popular with surfers and sailors, Liskeard is close to miles of glorious Cornish coastline and Plymouth Sound.
Liskeard is an attractive town with a caring community spirit. There are numerous independent shops in and around the town centre and some fabulous independent cafes and eateries which complement some famous national chains. As a result of the strong agricultural community in the area, Liskeard was once a bustling hub for livestock markets, you will never be short on local Cornish produce. This is especially evident at the annual Ploughman’s Festival where stalls and trailers will serve you local produce in the morning, followed by an evening of entertainment.
Speaking of entertainment, there is an abundance of activities within Liskeard and within a short distance from the town. There are numerous walks and cycle routes, many with stunning country or coastline scenery. Siblyback Lake offers recreational activity including children’s play areas, picnic areas, walking, cycling, camping sailing and kayaking, and is a short distance from the picturesque Golitha Falls, popular with dog walkers and photographers. For the more adventurous, Adrenalin Quarry will push you to the limits with its water park, race track, inflatable playground and zip wires.
Leisure and sports is a prominent part of Liskeard life. The leisure centre at Lux Park offers a fully equipped gym, sports courts and swimming pool. Football is represented by Non-league Liskeard Athletic and there are well supported cricket and rugby teams in the town.
Liskeard and the surrounding area has a rich history in mining, especially around Caradon and Bodmin Moor where you can still see the remains of engine houses and mines which once produced copper, tin and many other minerals. The mines around Liskeard are part of the World Heritage Site for Mining Landscape in Cornwall and West Devon.
